Margarita Pita

I am a cultural manager, a lawyer and a theatre practitioner based in Athens. I studied Law at the University of Athens and I received vocational training in Theatre and Acting in Athens and London. I have a Master in Arts and Culture Management from the Rome Business School. I am a trained Mediator and I have also received non-formal training in participatory leadership and community engagement tools, two fields that I particularly love.

Since 2010, I have consistently worked as freelancer in all three fields in Athens, London and Berlin. My experience encompasses the development of community engagement projects through theatre, participatory leadership and artistic interventions. I have collaborated with prestigious organisations like the Old Vic Theatre of London for the development of its Community Company and two theatre productions (2013-2015). I was appointed by the European Candidacy Office of Kalamata for the European Capital of Culture 2021 to collaborate with the Artistic Director in the artistic programming of the bid and the design of the city’s outreach strategy. This latter was a particularly rich experience for me since our process involved the participation of a very diverse group of engaged citizens. I also collaborated with the Municipality of Athens and UrbanDig Project performing arts company, to develop a community engagement toolkit for the Open Schools Programme. This programme entailed the transformation of 25 schools of Athens to neighbourhood community centres.

I am also a member of the Cultural Innovators Network through which I developed projects like Let’s keep in touch!, a 2-year long library and storytelling project at the refugee camp near Athens, supported by the Goethe Institut Athen, Rabat and EUNIC Global. My experience both with grassroots organizations and larger institutions has helped me develop a “two-gear” vocabulary and perspective that may be particularly helpful in finding new ways of connecting through active citizenship.
